Smoking on College Campuses

Smoking on college campuses is a very popular fad among college students. There are many people who smoke, but there are just as many if not more that hate smoking or being around it. At Valdosta State University you walk around campus and you will see people walking around smoking, by the dorms, or just sitting around with friends smoking.
It is a fact that second hand smoke is deadlier than actually smoking a cigarette. In the article Second Hand Smoke Statistics it talks about the harmful and dangerous affects of second hand smoke. Smokers do not think about their second hand smoke and how it affects the people around them. They should be more respectful about the people around them.
When doing research I found out that many college campuses have banded smoking on campus, or having any source of tobacoo by any student or professor. In the article No Smoking On Campus it says that more than 300 schools have banned smoking on campus and the violators can be fined anywhere from $100-$500.

  1. I agree with walking around campus people are rude and have no respect for how you feel about smoking. It is more than just the cigarettes that are the problem. It is proven that the smoker only inhales 15% of the smoke let out from the cigarette, while the other 85% is for all the non-smokers to breathe. Which is unfair toward the people who are trying to be healthy and avoiding to smoke. Tobacco has killed more than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. So how disrespectful can a place you would call home and live on cause you so much danger. Tobacco should not be allowed to be smoked on school it is not just your life you are risking. Its your friends and even the people that you do not even know. Just for you to get the satisfaction on inhaling you closer to your death that odes not mean everyone else wants to. Yes, smoking is something you enjoy and i understand that you need it, but sex is just as enjoyable. But it is wrong for someone to walk out of there residence hall and see someone having sex on the wall. They are both things different people like but is still disrespectful towards people.
I believe adding more information about how the second hand smoking is worse than just a smoker smoking himself as i said. I believe you have a very good points and that this should actually be taken serious in Valdosta for the people who care about there heath.

  3. agree that smoking is a very popular and deadly fad. People who hate smoking and have parents or friends that smoke are at a higher risk of getting cancer. The solution to this problem is to let people smoke but in designated areas like they do in airports. With doing this we will make this harder for smokers to smoke. If its harder for them to smoke then maybe they will to lazy to go to a smoking area and just quit. Solving their problem and ours so that no one ends up getting cancer.

  4. When I walk out of my dorm and smell cigarette smoke I immediatly look for who has it, and I try to walk the other way. It smells so awful to me that I just try to avoid it completely.

I dont think that students or facualty should be allowed to smoke on campus. Unless there is like a particular area to where all the smokers can go to enjoy their cancer stick. Otherwise, people who dont smoke should not have to suffer concequences that we have no part of.

  5. Second hand smoke is not deadlier than smoking, but I agree that smoking in public should be banned. Compromising someone's health is infringing on their rights, therefore smoking in public or around children should be illegal. I hate enjoying my walk to class on our beautiful campus only to walk into a cloud of cigarette smoke.
When I was growing up, my grandparents kept me during the day because my parents worked. My grandfather was a heavy smoker and he often smoked in the house. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, second hand smoke triggers asthma attacks and is even a risk factor to preschool age children who previously did not show symptoms of having asthma. It was around this age that I starting showing symptoms of asthma.
I grew up with breathing problems because of the second hand smoke I was exposed to and I can not get a cold to this day without it usually turning into asthma complications.
I am an example of what second hand smoke can do to a child, but fortunately I have grown out of the worst of my asthma. I believe that public smokers are inconsiderate and that public smoking should be banned.

  6. Second Hand smoke is a very dangerous thing and I agree that a lot of smokers don’t think about their surroundings and how it affects non-smokers. Although there are some smokers that are disrespectful, if smoking was banned on campus where are smokers supposed to go to smoke? I personally don’t think that smoking should be completely banned from campus, but I do think there should be certain areas on campus that smoking is allowed. The areas should be in an isolated place on campus so that non-smokers aren’t affected by the second hand smoke. If this was the solution rather than banning it completely I think that it would not only make non-smokers happy, but also people who do smoke happy.

  7. Cigarette smokers don't realize the harm that they are causing, not only to their own bodies, but to others around them also. in the article About Second Hand Smoke, its been proven that there are over 4000 chemicals that come from second hand smoke, with 200 of the chemicals being poisonous. In all reality, it is down right disrespectful to smoke a cigarette around people that aren't smokers. The second hand smoke is not only harmful, but the smell is awful. Smokers don't smell the stench on themselves after they smoke because they are use to the smell, while non smokers seem to can smell you from a mile away. Centers of disease controls and prevention says, for every person who dies from a smoking related disease, 20 more people suffer with at least one serious illness of smoking. That is ridiculous how may lives could be affected by one cigarette smoker. No one should be forced to have to breathe in oxygen tainted with cigarette smoke.
