In my previous blog, majority of the comments disagreed saying that professional athletes are overpaid. Many viewers felt that the money that professional athletes make should be distributed to other professions that help provide security for the world. I noticed that most of the people that felt this way were females. I believe that most females feel this way because majority of them do not understand what it takes to become a professional athlete.
I do believe that athletes are overpaid. Professional athletes play sports, but sports are just a form of entertainment. Unfortunately, in our society we hold such a high regard for entertainers. Although professional athletes possess greater skills at their sport than most other athletes, entertainers do not educate our children and protect our country. However, economically professional athletes should make a large salary because of their abilities that are greater than the average athlete. I believe careers that aid in bettering our country, such as teachers, soldiers, and police officers, should make a larger salary than they do, but there is no possible way to take an athlete's salary away and distribute it to teachers and soldiers. It is idealistic to want those who seem underpaid to make a larger salary, but it is impractical because economically they make what they actually worth to our economy. I do not agree with your comment about females not knowing what it takes to be a professional athlete. There are many female professional athletes and being a female does not hinder someones understanding and comprehension.
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt professional athletes should be highly paid for the entertainment they provide their fans and spectators, but millions and millions of dollars? Come on people, most athletes only have to work one season of the year. Regardless if its football in the fall or baseball in the spring, athletes are paid millions to perform at their peak for only about three or four months. However, we have soldiers at war right now that are expected to perform at their peak for a two year period or even longer, or what about firefighters? They are expected to perform at their best each time one of them slide down that pole at the station responding to a call and look what their salary is. It's common knowledge to know that its not easy to be a professional athlete or to get on that level, but is it all hard work? Take the film Blindside for example, a documentary of pro football player Michael Oher who had never played football in his life until he was a freshman in high school. He was taught in three years and now makes ridiculous money. Not taking away from Michael Oher, but being born with the genes to eventually become 6'4 313 lbs. as Oher is now, is not hard work. Professionals such as pharmacist go to school for up to 18 years (K-12, six yrs. secondary and professional school), and if they are lucky they will make $100 K in a good year. Bottom line athletes are defiantly deserving of high pay, but not $45 Million a year like Lebron James made in 2009, a professional basketball idle that didn't even attend college. There needs to be a salary cap put on all athletes.
