Cell Phones, and How I'm Addicted

These days just about everyone owns a cell phone, grandparents, parents even little toddlers. My little brother, who is ten now, got a cell phone at the age of eight. What do children at that age possibly need a cell phone for? Learning how to handle technology at that age is a good thing, but could also be bad too. Kids have so much access to learn with the different types of computers and other things. However, with all the access kids have to particular information, technology may not be as good as we think it is for our children. More than half of teenage students text on a daily basis at school. Is this okay? Probably not. Yet, cell phones in school can be a good thing.

Cell phones have so many things going for them these days. There are over a thousand applications that can be used for school. Applications like dictionary, thesaurus, graphing calculator, textbooks or anything that you can pretty much think of. People use cell phones like computers these days, and considering how many kids have cell phones, then every has access to these useful applications.

Schools should allow students to keep their phones on in case of an emergency or in case they need to look up any information needed for class. They could easily find any information that could be useful for any project. Considering how education has had a downfall in the last couple of years, allowing cell phones could bring school work to the next level. Students won't have any excuse to have late work because it will all be saved on their phone.

Schools should take into consideration that phones aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and accept them by allowing phones. Even if the phones aren't allowed in the school, then having certain "phone time", where phones can be used with no consequences, will make them less of a desire to pull them out during lecture and students grades will increase.

  1. I do agree that cell phones should be allowed in school, but I don’t necessarily think that this solution alone will raise grades. Although cell phones are a big distraction during learning, they’re certainly not the only one. In most schools, cell phones are already not permitted during school hours unless there is an emergency, so why allow them more than they already are? Distractions other than a cell phone include: talking to fellow peers, passing notes, sleeping, taking fifteen minute bathroom breaks, and just playing around in general. Cell phones are in the same category as simply talking to a friend, just on a broader scale. Communication is a big factor of our economy today, it just happens to be that cell phones are used most for communication. Think about cell phones compared to talking in class, if we were able to talk more during class periods, would our grades rise? Probably not, just because the simple fact that talking with a peer could redirect your listening, from the teacher to the student.

  2. I believe that cell phones should be allowed in schools. Sometimes emergencies occur at school and an individual may need to get in contact with their family. I strongly believe that the people that want to be educated will and will not let their cell phone get in the way of their learning. I feel that others use cell phones as an excuse for not paying attention. Like also mentioned in this discussion, cell phones can serve as tools to look up words that an individual may not know, or even to make self notes about quizzes coming up. It will be difficult to banned cell phones from school since 8 out of every 10 students own one. Since cell phones are everywhere, people should spend more time on trying to find good uses for them rather than trying to banned them.

  3. I do agree that cell phones should be allowed in schools. however it is a distraction if the student is busy texting about the latest gossip and not focusing on their studies. It should be the student's responsibility to pay attention and not let something as simple as a cell phone distract them from their life goals. by that i mean a good education. We are the technology age, one fast and easy way for us to obtain information is through text messaging and email. These days cell phones come with so many applications that its the same as having a computer at your finger tips.
