All your life you've been told "breakfast is the most important meal of the day," "make sure you eat a good breakfast," etc. well you would be surprised to know that this is actually true. It is well known that obesity is becoming a high rising reality among Americans, especially in children. Not only does breakfast give you energy to get through the day, it is proven that children who eat breakfast are less likely to be obese compared to a child who doesn't. In Allison Brewer's blog, "Kids Who Skip Breakfast May Have Higher Obesity Risk," she lets us know more about this topic. "According to a study conducted by the Journal of American Dietetic Association, children (age 9-13) and adolescents (age 14-18) who consumed Ready-To-Eat cereals in the morning had lower intake of total fat and cholesterol as well as a higher intake of carbohydrates, dietary fiber and other essential nutrients in their diets compared to those who chose to spend more time with their pillow." Not only do the "breakfast skippers" gain more weight, they are also lacking the essential vitamins that breakfast provides.
It is a common misconception that skipping breakfast will help you lose weight. Contrary to popular belief, skipping meals actually makes you gain weight. Studies have proven this to be true. The article titled "Why Breakfast Is the Most Important Meal of the Day" lets us know all the benefits of eating breakfast. Obesity is more common in children who tend to skip breakfast. It is proven that it is more difficult to control your weight when you skip breakfast. Those children who DO eat breakfast in the morning are usually slimmer compared to those who don't. So the answer to the question is YES, skipping breakfast is making children fat. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure their children are informed. Are you making sure your child eats a balanced breakfast?
